Rear Differential Service

What is a Rear Differential Service? A Differential Service is replacing the fluid in the Rear Differential with new clean fluid. Why do you need to replace the fluid? Differential Fluid is oil and like all other fluids it breaks down from age and heat. There are 4 sets of bearings in the Differential that need lubrication. This service is recommended every 100,000 miles. When the Rear Differential Cover is removed a physical inspection of the gears needs to be done. The gears should be checked for pitting and chipping. If any pitted or chipped gears are found they will need to be replaced. Some Differentials need an additive to the oil when replacing it also.
