Why Is My Car Overheating? A Mechanic's Mystery Solved

If your car is overheating, the problem might not be as simple as it seems. At Automotive Blessings, we recently dealt with a challenging overheating case that highlights why choosing a shop with experienced technicians and a nationwide warranty matters.

Here’s What Happened:

  1. The Initial Diagnosis:
A customer brought in their car because it was overheating. Our first step was to check the cooling system for leaks. We found a few loose hose clamps, tightened them, and refilled the system. Simple fix, right? Unfortunately, the car was still overheating.
  2. Testing the Thermostat:
Suspecting a faulty thermostat, we removed it and tested it in 200°F water. Sure enough, it didn’t open—a common failure point. We replaced the thermostat, refilled the system, but the car was still overheating.
  3. Digging Deeper:
After learning that the timing belt, water pump, and transmission had recently been replaced, we started to wonder if the issue might be related to those repairs. We even replaced the radiator, suspecting it might be clogged, but the overheating persisted.
  4. The Real Culprit:
Finally, we inspected the “new” water pump. And there it was—a broken impeller! The water pump wasn’t circulating coolant properly. This meant we had to redo the timing belt and water pump job entirely.

Why a Nationwide Warranty Saved the Day

Here’s the good news for the customer: the previous shop that did the repair is a Technet member, just like we are. That means the repair is covered under Technet’s nationwide warranty. The customer won’t have to pay for the same job twice.

If you’re not using a repair shop with a nationwide warranty, you could be left footing the bill for someone else’s mistakes.

Not changing the power steering fluid in your vehicle can lead to several issues: Contaminated Fluid: Fluid can become contaminated with dirt, and metal particles. They can build up and damage the system, such as the pump, rack and pinion, and seals. Reduced Performance: As the fluid gets older, its lubricating ability is less. This results in more friction and wear within the system. You may experience hard turning, or a whining noise. Component Damage: The pump will have higher temperatures due to dirty fluid. This can lead to wear and failure of the pump. Seals within the system can get hard, causing them to leak.
